Water Leak: 5 Things to Do Before the Plumber Arrives

A water leak can quickly cause major damage if not contained in time. Even before the plumber arrives, you can take simple steps to limit the impact. Here are 5 things to do in case of a water leak in Brussels or the surrounding areas.

1. Turn off the water supply immediately

As soon as you spot a leak (at a tap, under the sink, or in the wall), turn off the main water supply to your home. The shut-off valve is usually located in the basement, near the meter, or in the bathroom.

2. Cut the power if necessary

If water is getting near a socket, appliance or electrical panel, switch off the electricity to avoid any risk of short circuit or electrocution.

3. Contain the leak temporarily

Use a bucket, basin or towel to contain the water. If the leak is visible (e.g. damaged hose or joint), you may be able to slow it down with adhesive tape or cloth until the plumber arrives.

4. Take photos of the damage

Take photos or videos of the affected areas. These will serve as evidence for your insurance. If the source of the leak is visible, photograph it too.

5. Call a local plumber quickly

Don’t wait: contact a nearby plumber. At Hydro Therm, we respond 7 days a week in Brussels and throughout Flemish and Walloon Brabant for visible and hidden leaks.
