How to Unclog a Sink Naturally?

A clogged sink can quickly become a nightmare in the kitchen or bathroom. Before calling a professional plumber, there are a few simple and natural methods you can try—without using harsh chemical products.

1. Use baking soda and vinegar

This is the most well-known natural method. Here’s how to do it:

  • Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain.
  • Add half a cup of white vinegar.
  • Cover the drain for 30 minutes (with a plug or cloth).
  • Rinse with a pot of boiling water.

This combination creates a fizzy reaction that can break down soap, grease, or hair build-up.

2. Boiling water alone

In some cases, a simple pot of boiling water poured in stages is enough to loosen the blockage. This method works best for minor clogs caused by grease or soap.

3. Manual plunger

Place a plunger over the drain and pump firmly. This can be enough to mechanically unblock the sink, especially if the clog isn’t too deep.

4. Wire or metal hanger

Straighten a wire hanger, form a small hook at the end, and gently insert it into the drain to pull out hair, debris, or stuck objects.

When should you call a professional?

If the sink remains clogged after trying these methods, the blockage may be deeper in the pipes. In that case, professional intervention is needed using specialized equipment (high-pressure pump, camera inspection).

At Hydro Therm, we intervene quickly in Brussels and all of Brabant to unblock any type of drain—whether in the kitchen, bathroom, or sewer lines.
