Why You Should Never Flush Wipes Down the Toilet
Many people believe disposable wipes can be flushed like toilet paper. However, this habit causes serious damage to household pipes and public sewers. Here’s why you should always throw wipes in the bin.
1. Wipes don’t break down in water
Unlike toilet paper, wet wipes—even so-called “biodegradable” ones—are made from synthetic fibers (polyester, viscose…). They resist water and remain intact for a long time. As a result, they build up in pipes and create tough clogs.
2. They cause blockages that are hard to remove
Wipes easily get stuck in pipe bends or older joints. Combined with grease, hair or soap residue, they form compact masses that completely block water flow.
3. They damage wastewater treatment plants
Even if they pass through your plumbing, wipes reach treatment facilities and clog pumps, filters, and motors. Cleaning and repair cost public services millions of euros every year.
What to do instead?
Use wipes if you like, but always throw them in the trash (household waste). Better yet, use a wet washcloth or reusable cleaning method to reduce your impact.
